On Thursday, October 17, the City of Newark invites the public to a workshop to learn about the sustainability plan draft,
Sustainable Newark. Areas of focus include the City's commitment to clean energy, sustainable land development and clean transportation, sustainable building design, and preservation of natural resources and waste reduction.
The city strives to be a responsible steward of natural, human, and economic resources to ensure an equitable and prosperous community by balancing the needs of people and the planet and relying on robust civic engagement to enhance the quality of life for current and future generations. To achieve this vision, the Plan is organized around four interrelated themes, with concrete goals and action items under each:
Theme 1: We Respond to Climate Change
Theme 2: We Plan and Develop for All
Theme 3: We Build Better, Waste Less
Theme 4: We Preserve Nature, Reduce Impacts
The Public Workshop is designed so that people may "drop-in" any time between 4:00-6:00 p.m. for individual discussions with City staff and Steering Committee members on the Plan's recommendations. The City of Newark's Council Chamber will be set up with exhibits providing an overview of the Sustainability Plan. The complete Plan can be read on the
City's website.
Established in 2017, the Sustainability Planning Steering Committee is comprised of a cross section of representatives from government bodies, civic organizations, and residents of the City with a common goal of creating a socially fair, economically strong, and environmentally healthy place to live, work, and play.
Sustainable Newark is a long-term plan to help the community realize its collective sustainability goals. On Tuesday, October 8, the Conservation Advisory Committee reviewed
Sustainable Newark and unanimously recommended that Council "adopt and embrace" the plan and its goals and action items.
Following the public workshop, the plan will be discussed and voted on by City Council at their November 11 meeting.
