The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is scheduled to begin the work associated with the Main Street Rehabilitation and Pedestrian Improvement project on Monday, April 1, 2019. Starting in April 2019, please go to www.mainstreetimprovements.com to get regular updates on the project.
The City of Newark has contracted with DelDOT’s contractor (A-DEL Construction) to make repairs to the water main along Main Street as part of DelDOT’s project. The contractor will be removing and replacing fire hydrant assemblies and installing inline valves. This will improve hydrant reliability, fire flow and improve the City’s ability to isolate segments of the water distribution system to perform future repairs with fewer impacts to customers. This water main improvement work is planned to begin April 1, 2019 and completed by August 2019. Water service disruption, when required, will occur between the hours of 12 a.m. and 7 a.m.
The work will be performed in eight (8) separate phases to minimize the extent of service disruptions to our customers. The contractor will be cutting into the main to install the new valves and hydrants, causing a loss in system pressure. Due to this pressure loss, there will be planned boil water advisories for each phase of the work. This is a common advisory, which is issued as a precaution until water samples are collected and analyzed to confirm that water quality has not been affected. Notices will be issued to affected properties prior to service disruptions with specific information on the timing of the outage and boil water status.
