[ARCHIVED] City of Newark Ranked Among Safest Cities in Delaware

Citing grassroots efforts and an increase in police personnel as reasons for making Delaware a safer place to live, SafeWise recently released its "10 Safest Cities in Delaware" report, listing Newark as the safest large City in the state and 4th safest overall.

"The city's ranking is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the Newark Police Department," said Police Chief Paul Tiernan. "Our focus on community policing, along with the support and partnerships we have with the citizens of Newark, clearly plays a role in being the safest large city in Delaware."

To compile this report, SafeWise reviewed the 2016 FBI crime report statistics and population data. Cities that fell below identified population thresholds (2,440) or that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI were excluded from the ranking system.

The evaluation was based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) in each city. If there was a tie, SafeWise also factored in the number of property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft). To level the playing field, they calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city. This makes it easier to directly compare the likelihood of these crimes occurring in cities with vastly different populations.
