[ARCHIVED] Newark Police Department Receives Gold Standard Accreditation

CALEA NPD Post

Underscoring an ongoing commitment to serving its community, the Newark Police Department (NPD) recently received its 8th award for Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The commission awarded NPD the "Gold Standard with Excellence Award," the highest award bestowed upon a police agency. During the commission conference held in Frisco, TX, 105 agencies were reviewed, with only 17 attaining the Gold Standard with Excellence Award.

"This award demonstrates the demanding work and dedication of the men and women of the Newark Police Department," said Chief Paul Tiernan. "It further signifies that the Newark Police Department maintains the highest standards and best practices in law enforcement, which is something the agency and the community should truly be proud of."

A team of assessors from CALEA conducted an on-site assessment in Newark from December 3rd through December 6th, 2017, as part of the program to maintain law enforcement accreditation. Deputy Chief Jason Moen of the Auburn Maine Police Department and Mr. John Tucker of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division examined all aspects of the NPD's policies and procedures, management, operations, support services and community outreach to verify it meets the professional policing standards set forth by CALEA.

About CALEA

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA®) was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of law enforcement's major executive associations: International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), National Sheriffs' Association (NSA), and Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). The purpose of CALEA's Accreditation Programs is to improve the delivery of public safety services primarily by: maintaining a body of standards, developed by public safety practitioners, covering a wide range of up-to-date public safety initiatives; establishing and administering an accreditation process; and recognizing professional excellence.
