January 8, 2017 – Newark Police saw a significant decrease
in crime in 2017 with an overall 18.6% decrease in Part 1 Crimes.
Comparing the time period of January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016 to the
same time period in 2017, Robberies decreased by 24.4%, Burglaries decreased by
37.2%, and Thefts decreased by 17.7%. In analyzing our 10 year crime
trend between 2007 and 2017, Part 1 Crimes are down 43.1%, with Robberies
decreasing by 43.7%, Burglaries being down by 74.3%, and Thefts decreasing by
40.8%.
“Due to the tireless efforts of our officers and the
community, the City of Newark has once again experienced a decline in violent
crime. The Newark Police Department will continue to foster our close
relationship with the residents of the City to combat all crime and we
anticipate this relationship will continue to lower violent crime in the
future,” said Newark Police Chief Paul Tiernan.
