Due to freezing temperatures, Code Purple has been called for Friday, December 29 through Monday, January 1. During Code Purple, a coalition of Newark churches, which rotate in being the host site, opens as an emergency sanctuary from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. The host facility provides access to bathrooms, a light evening meal, hot beverages and beds throughout the night.
Friday's host facility will be Holy Family Catholic Church at 15 Gender Road.
Saturday's host facility will be St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 701 S. College Avenue.
Sunday's host facility will be St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 276 S. College Avenue.
Monday's host facility will be First Presbyterian Church at 292 W. Main Street.
Those in the Newark area who are in need of sanctuary from the cold weather are encouraged to call (302) 544-0165, and sign up for services with the Newark Empowerment Center. The center’s office hours are Monday – Friday from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m
